A little about us and a lot about our products

Organic and local

At Manuka, we source Organic products wherever possible. You will find a few non-Organic options in-store; usually from local suppliers that we’re happy to support. We like to use the term ‘Organic and Local’ to describe ourselves, which is a pretty good summary of what we stock at Manuka Wholefoods.

Look for the soil association mark. What does it mean if it has this label?
When you choose organic food and other products, you’re helping more than yourself. You’re supporting farmers and producers who work hard to meet the standards because they believe in.

Organic standards in brief
• No toxic or persistent pesticides or herbicides
• No sewer sludge or synthetic fertilisers
• No GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
• No antibiotics
• No synthetic growth hormones
• No irradiation

Organic meat, eggs and dairy products
Meat, eggs and dairy products with the organic label must come from animals fed organic – which also means non-GMO – feed, given fresh air and outdoor access and raised without antibiotics or added growth hormones*.

What is biodynamic agriculture?
Biodynamic agriculture is an ecological farming approach that views each farm as a living organism. The health and well-being of the farm animals, the farmer, the farm and the Earth are all viewed as integral parts that make up the whole.

What makes biodynamic farming different?
Biodynamic farmers approach their farms as self-sustaining ecosystems. Like organic farmers, biodynamic farmers avoid synthetic chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and GMOs. In addition, biodynamic farmers focus on specific, farm-made solutions to pest control, soil health and fertility. They strive to reduce the volume of imported materials and to nurture the potential of the farm’s own resources, which include water and biodiversity.

Organic bodycare products

There are plenty of organic options in the bodycare ranges we stock and those include Dr Hauschka, Weleda, Lavera, Neal’s Yard, and Antipodes. There are non-organic options but the common feature in all our bodycare ranges is the absence of GMO, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicon, PEG, synthetic perfumes and dyes, animal-derived ingredients (unless naturally produced by them ie milk, honey). These are the substances that are harmful to our bodies and should be avoided. Included in our bodycare ranges are toothpaste, sunscreen, hair dye, haircare, skincare etc.

Each country has its own Organic certification and the following are the symbols used in the production of bodycare products for the ranges we keep in store.
